How to apply for a credit card without a Social Security Number

1 Minute Read

How to get an ITIN in order to apply for financial productsMaria has recently arrived in the US and realizes that her life would be much easier if she had a credit card. She is also working hard to save some money to buy a house in the future. However, without credit history in the USA, she hesitates about her probabilities of getting a mortgage. When applying for these products, some lenders ask for a Social Security Number (SSN) which she is not eligible to receive due to her immigration status.

Similarly to Maria, over 12 million people cannot apply for a SSN. The good news is that there is another way to obtain a credit card and build a credit history. You can use an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) as a substitute for the SSN and start applying for credit cards. So what are the steps to apply for it? “Que no panda el cunico!”, Crediverso is here to tell you how to obtain it:

To apply for an ITIN, fill out an application, which you can find on the IRS website. You can mail in the application, or bring it to an IRS-approved acceptance agent or an IRS taxpayer assistance center, located in cities across the United States. You’ll need to include proof of identity and foreign status; a passport or visa satisfies both requirements. After you submit your application, you’ll receive a letter from the IRS within six weeks containing your ITIN.

Since international credit histories are not used by American lenders to offer you financial products, you have to build the history from scratch. Apply for credit cards in one of the financial intuitions that accept ITIN (e.g.: Amex, Citi, Bank of America, Capital One, among others) and start building a strong credit history from day one.
